Country Codes

Canadian Postal Codes Complete List and FSA Reference

Canadian postal codes are alphanumeric codes that follow a specific format and structure. They are essential for mail delivery and geographic identification across Canada’s provinces and territories.

Format and Structure

Canadian postal codes follow the format A1A 1A1, where:

  • A represents a letter
  • 1 represents a digit
  • A space separates the third and fourth characters

Example: K1A 0B1 (Canada Post’s Ottawa headquarters)

Key Components

Forward Sortation Area (FSA)

The first three characters (A1A) make up the Forward Sortation Area, which identifies:

  • The province or territory
  • A specific region within that province/territory

Local Delivery Unit (LDU)

The last three characters (1A1) represent the Local Delivery Unit, which pinpoints:

  • A specific address or group of addresses
  • Local delivery routes within the FSA

Character Restrictions

Certain letters are never used in Canadian postal codes:

  • D, F, I, O, Q, U – excluded due to visual similarity to numbers (0, E, 1, 0, 0, V)
  • W, Z – also excluded from the system
